Competitions at Nationals
All competitions at Nationals will follow the same theme, be based on the same rules, and use the same competition materials (such as judging ballots, study packets, etc.) as those used in the regional events. New prompts and questions may or may not be used for extemporaneous competitions (such as Knowledge Tests, Islamic Scholastic Bowl, Debate, etc.).  The Knowledge Test competitions will be based on the same books from regionals.

Competition Submissions from Regionals
Students have the option of submitting the same competition materials they used from this year’s regional event, or submitting revised versions of their work, or submitting new work altogether.  All work must be original and created exclusively for this year’s MIST competitions.

Competition Materials Submission Deadline
All competition materials must be submitted on Friday, July 25th during orientations at MIST Nationals.  For competitors who choose not to attend MIST on Friday, they may attend a second round of orientations on Saturday morning, 8am-9am, but please remember, all MIST attendees must be in Atlanta by 10pm on Friday, July 25th.

Eligible Competitors
The top five winners from each competition at every official 2008 MIST Regional event will be invited to compete at Nationals.  Check your regional website for an official list of winners.

Competitor Replacement Policy
Only students who were registered as competitors at Regionals may compete at Nationals (with one exception, outlined below).  For group competitions (Web Design, Islamic Scholastic Bowl, all of the Group Projects competitions, and Basketball), any competitors from your team may register for these competitions, whether or not they were specifically registered for these competitions at Regionals.

EXCEPTION: If your team is qualified to compete in any group competition (except Basketball) that requires a minimum number of students to register, but does not have enough students to fulfill this requirement, then your team will be allowed to register new students in order to satisfy the minimum requirement.  For example, if your team is qualified to compete in Islamic Scholastic Bowl but only one member of your team from Regionals is able to attend Nationals, then you will be allowed to register one new competitor (who was not registered as a competitor at Regionals) in order to fulfill the requirement to compete.  New students must follow the same guidelines for eligibility from Regionals.  A new competitor fee of $15 is applies to all newly registered competitors.

Basketball at Nationals
Students who are competing in Basketball are NOT required to compete in at least one other competition at Nationals unless they have properly qualified through Regionals.  Students who are ONLY competing in Basketball during Nationals will be required to show exemplary behavior during MIST and attend at least two-thirds of the available workshops.

Teams with serious behavioral infractions and attendance problems will receive ONE warning to correct their mistakes (absolute zero tolerance for serious behavioral problems) before their team is completely disqualified from their competition and all parents/guardians of the team’s competitors are contacted regarding the matter.  Depending on the severity of the infraction, unruly team members may be sent home early, even students from out-of-town.

Teams who qualify to compete in Basketball but who still do not have enough team members to compete at Nationals (less than 5 students) will be “clumped.”  MIST organizers will take small teams and group them together to compete as one team for the duration of Basketball.  All MIST teams participating in a clumped Basketball team that ranks will be awarded points and recognized equally.  All teams who require clumping will be notified of their assigned team partners in advance (prior to MIST weekend).

Registration
A new registration system will be in effect for Nationals.  In this new system, three types of participants are recognized as members of an official MIST team: competitors, coaches, and guests.  Anybody who is not a competitor or a coach is automatically a guest, and guests either have the option to affiliate with a registered team or register under a phantom team called “General Admission.”  All participants on the team give their respective forms and fees to their team’s Registration In-Charge.  The Registration In-Charge fills in the Complete List of Team Participants and Fees and the Competition Sign-up Sheet forms and submits all the forms and fees together to their respective Regional Registration Headquarters.
